Clyde made a winning start to their City of Glasgow Cup campaign this evening, registering a 3-1 victory over an energetic Celtic Colts side at Broadwood.
Michael McGee was given his first Clyde start in goals, and with several players on the injury list, Danny Lennon named himself as a substitute to make up the numbers. The Bully Wee came close to scoring in the opening minutes but Martin McNiff's header came back off the crossbar. At the other end McGee was equal to his first test, making a good save from Luca Connell's drive.

Ally Love broke the deadlock four minutes before the interval. The captain for the evening was on the receiving end of Chris Johnston's teasing cross into the box, and guided a header past Liam Hughes in the Celtic goal.

The young Hoops' side almost found an equaliser just after the restart. McGee made another smart save from Jack Aitchison, and the ball broke to Ewan Henderson on the edge of the area, who rifled a shot against the base of the post. Darren Smith then came close to doubling Clyde's advantage in the 52nd minute when he met Johnston's cross, but Hughes turned his header behind. From Johnston's resulting corner it was 2-0, as Craig Howie powered home a header from the centre of the box.

Howie almost got another goal in spectacular style. From a free-kick ten yards inside his own half, he spotted Hughes off his line and thumped the ball towards goal. The Celtic 'keeper scampered back and managed to save his blushes by just getting a hand to it inches from the line. Clyde kept looking for a third and Smith was desperately unlucky not to score after showing great skill to twist past two Celtic defenders, before Hughes came out to smother his attempt.

The visitors began to dictate proceedings as the game wore on but created little in the way of clear cut opportunities. They did however pull a goal back from the penalty spot with a quarter of an hour remaining. Peter Stuart pointed to the spot after Love barged Armstrong Oko-Flex, and Henderson made no mistake from 12 yards.
Danny Lennon then introduced himself to proceedings to help his side to see the game out. Every touch of the ball by the 50-year-old was greeted with a warm cheer by the Clyde support.

McGee made a vital point-blank save from Oko-Flex with time running out to protect Clyde's lead, and the result was sealed in stoppage time when Mark Lamont robbed Henderson of possession on the half-way line and drove forward. He attempted to square the ball for the unmarked Smith to finish the move, but the pass was intercepted by Celtic skipper Stephen Welsh, who could only slot it beyond his own 'keeper and into the back of the net.

Two late goals gave Partick Thistle a victory over Rangers Development side in the opening game of this season’s Glasgow Cup. A Lewis Mansell strike was diverted into the net after taking a deflection on the 85th minute before Alex Jones got the second with just three minutes remaining.

Rangers fielded a side mixed with youth and first-team players as Matt Polster, Jake Hastie and Brandon Barker came into Graeme Murty’s starting eleven. Kai Kennedy had an early shot for Rangers with just three minutes on the clock as Dapo Mebude diverted Jake Hastie’s cross into his path but the shot was just wide from the number 10. Kennedy again threatened the Partick Thistle goal just a few minutes later as he swung a dangerous free-kick into the area, which troubled goalkeeper Jamie Sneddon who was dealing with low sun, but the free-kick was turned behind for a corner.

In a spell of  early pressure from the Gers Brandon Barker saw his shot from inside the area blocked by Sneddon. Partick had their first effort of the game on the 13th minute as Alex Jones’ shot had Keiran Wright at full stretch as it drifted just wide of the Rangers goal. Jones took a free-kick on the 24th minute as he tried to curl the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box but it was just over the bar. Matt Polster had a good chance for Rangers a few minutes later as he got on the end of a Jake Hastie corner but his effort was glanced just wide of the target.

Early in the second-half Jamie Barjonas tested the keeper as his powerful strike from 25-yards was tipped over by the Thistle keeper. At the other end Kieran Wright was called into action as he produced a good save to deny Rangers’ loanee Cammy Palmer from opening the scoring for Partick Thistle. Wright produced another save just after the hour mark as he pushed wide a shot from Thistle substitute Joe Cardle.
Rangers were pressuring late on for a goal with Kai Kennedy sending a cross into Dapo Mebude but he couldn’t get enough of a touch on the ball and it was saved by Jamie Sneddon. The Partick Thistle keeper had a great double save as he denied Lewis Mayo from close range before Dapo Mebude cut in from the right to fire his shot just wide.

Gary Caldwell’s side opened the scoring on the 85th minute as Lewis Mansell’s shot was turned into the net after taking a deflection off of a Rangers defender.
The Championship side got their second just two minutes later, as Alex Jones doubled the scoring.

Rangers: Wright, Patterson, Maxwell, Mayo, Breen, Polster, Hastie (Young-Coombes,87), Barjonas, Mebude, Kennedy, Barker (Atakayi, 67). Subs: Budinauckas, Finlayson, Thomson, Balde, Butterworth.

Tue, 1st October 2019

Partick Thistle contested the second match of their 2019/20 Glasgow Cup campaign as Queen’s Park came to Maryhill with the Jags looking to build on their 2-0 win over Rangers in game number one.
Jamie Sneddon started in goals for Thistle with Osman Kakay, Steven Saunders, Ben Hall and James Penrice making up the back four. In midfield, Craig Slater made his long-awaited return from injury alongside Reece Cole and Mouhamed Niang. Raffaele De Vita and Evan Galasso provided the width in attack with Lewis Mansell playing through the middle. On the hosts’ bench were Mason McCready, Andy Rodden, Ruaridh McIntyre, Dean Watson, Bradley Renfrew, Billy Owens and Ewan Cameron.

To start the game, the Jags were enjoying more of the possession, however, it was Queen’s Park who manufactured the first chance of the game as Alfredo Agyeman forced Jamie Sneddon into an early save. The former Motherwell man found space on the right and tried to beat Sneddon at the near post but the ‘stopper was alert and able to turn it round the upright. The resulting corner caused some problems too as Ben Hall was forced into an awkward clearance in the six-yard box. Fortunately, the ball deflected off him and over the bar rather than into the net.

After plenty of time probing, the home side finally carved out an opportunity of their own in the 18th minute as Mouhamed Niang slid the ball through to Lewis Mansell but as the striker looked to fire home, he lifted his shot over the crossbar.

Thistle went close again a couple of minutes later when Evan Galasso broke through down the Jags’ left and managed to get the ball to Raffaele De Vita in the box. A loose first touch opened the target up for the Italian, however, his low shot made for a fairly comfortable save in the end, to the delight of ex-Jags ‘keeper, David Crawford.

On the half hour mark, the Jags had another chance as Osman Kakay fed a well-weighted pas through to Mouhamed Niang in the box. The young midfielder cut past his man and tried to find the bottom corner at the near post but his effort was relatively tame and saved easily by Jacques Heraghty, who replaced David Crawford between the sticks for the Spiders moments prior.

Despite this pressure from the men in red and yellow, it was the hosts’ who struck first in the 37th minute. Having repelled the initial threat of a Queen’s Park counter-attack, Thistle failed to clear the ball and Reagan Thomson picked it up just inside the box. As he tried to find some space to shoot from, Craig Slater attempted a challenge from behind which sent Thomsom to the floor and promted referee, Euan Birch, to point to the spot. The man who won the penalty also took it as the Spiders’ number 10 converted coolly past Sneddon.

There was almost an immediate equaliser for the home side as the visitors played themselves into trouble in their own box. Osman Kakay managed to intercept in the six-yard box but, as he tried to force it over the line from close range, the ball was somehow scrambled clear and no goal was given despite the Englishman’s claims.

There would be a leveller before the break though and it was Lewis Mansell with goal. Craig Slater and Reece Cole played a quick one-two from the corner kick allowing the former to deliver a deep ball into the box at a favourable angle. His cross found Raffaele De Vita who tried a volley on goal. The Italian’s attempt dragged flashed across the face of goal and Lewis Mansell was on hand to redirect it into the net.
Following an eventful first half during which he gave away a penalty and essentially created a goal, Craig Slater was substituted as highly-rated 16-year-old, Billy Owens, came out for the second half in his place.
The first chance of the second half fell for the man who netted the Jags’ equaliser, Lewis Mansell, with Evan Galasso the architect on this occasion. The number 11 used some nifty footwork to beat his marker before curling a low ball into Mansell’s path. Unfortunately, the forward had to stretch for the shot and could only guide it past the far post.

They came close to taking the lead again in the 56th minute when Reece Cole’s corner kick found the head of Steven Saunders but substitute goalkeeper, Jacques Heraghty, got down well to make the save.
The next chance of the game didn’t come until the 84th minute when a brilliant Billy Owens pass got Galasso moving down the left flank once again. The winger put in another wonderful cross picking out Raffaele De Vita whose header flashed just past the post.

De Vita would get another chance moments later and this time he made no mistake in putting the Jags a goal up with four minutes to play. Reece Cole got the ball in the middle of the park and fizzed a pass into the feet of Billy Owens who quickly opened it up to Osman Kakay. The right-back played a driven ball into the danger area, and after deflecting off Jags substitute Dean Watson, the ball fell to De Vita who powerfully fired home.
That would be the final significant action of the game as Thistle ran out 2-1 winners making it two out of two in this season's City of Glasgow Cup.

Partick Thistle: Sneddon, Kakay, Penrice, Saunders, Hall, Niang, Slate (Owens, 46), Cole, Mansell (Watson, 84), De Vita, Galasso.

Queen’s Park:  Crawford (Heraghty, 29), Grant, Summers, Griffiths, Foy, Main, Aygeman, McGrory, McGuire (Nicol, 65), Thomson, Purdue.

A young Clyde side was on the end of a heavy loss against an experienced Partick Thistle team at Firhill this evening in the City of Glasgow Cup.

The Bully Wee squad was mostly made up of players from the community teams, with only Michael McGee, Liam Allison, Tony Wallace and Darren Smith coming from the first-team squad.

The hosts took an early lead but Clyde came back into the game and equalised in the 24th minute. Johnny McCabe made a run down the left and fizzed a low cross into the box, which the Thistle 'keeper parried into the path of Fraser Malcolm, who prodded into the net from close range.

The Jags then dominated proceedings and Clyde had Michael McGee to thank for keeping them in the game, with the 'keeper pulling off half a dozen top drawer saves. The Firhill side did score another two goals and went into the interval 3-1 up.

It was all one-way traffic in the second half and Partick carved open the Clyde defence on numerous occasions. McGee again made several fine stops but had to pick the ball out of the back of the net on a further six occasions.

Partick Thistle: McCready, Williamson, Robson, O’Ware, Hall, Harkins, De Vita, Niang, Galas, Jones, Austin.

Super sub Liam Burt grabbed a last-gasp equaliser to give Celtic a share of the spoils against Partick Thistle in this Glasgow Cup tie. Tommy McIntyre’s side had trailed to a goal on the hour mark from Mohamed Niang, but they kept battling at the Dumbarton Football Stadium and eventually got their reward.

Both sides started the match with attacking intent, and it was Celtic who created the first real chance after nine minutes when Daniel Church set up Jonathan Afolabi, but the Irishman’s effort went just wide of the post. The Hoops continued to press forward in search of the opener, but it was Thistle who almost opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark, but Mitch Austin’s shot hit the side-netting.

Armstrong Oko-Flex and Karamoko Dembele combined well on the edge of the Thistle box, but a brilliantly-timed tackle took the ball away from the Celtic youngster, and with six minutes of the first-half remaining, Dembele came close to scoring, but his shot was well saved by goalkeeper, Jamie Sneddon.

Tommy McIntyre’s side started the second-half on the front foot, creating a number of half-chances, but they found themselves a goal down after 60 minutes when Niang fired home from close-range, but the goalscorer was lucky to stay on the park following a late lunge on Luca Connell just three minutes later. Thankfully, after treatment, the Celtic player was able to continue, while Thistle immediately substituted Niang.

In the 67th minute, the Hoops came close to equalising but Oko-Flex’s effort crashed back off the bar, while a few minutes later Thistle had the ball in the net, but it was disallowed. With time running out for Celtic, Liam Burt proved to be the hero, firing home from six yards out to give the Hoops a well-deserved equaliser.

Clyde: McNeil (26 min.)

The Bully Wee and Queen's Park played out a draw in the City of Glasgow Cup at Broadwood Stadium. The Clyde side was supplemented by community team players Ryan Lindsay, Daniel Morrison and Aaron McNeil.

Queen's Park took an early lead after Clyde failed to clear properly from a corner, and Kieran Moore poked home from close range. The home side then thought they had equalised when Ally Love tapped home the rebound from an Aaron McNeil effort. The assistant referee flagged for offside however, despite Love appearing to be onside from the initial shot.

Clyde did level things up in the 26th minute in sensational style through McNeil. A cross-field ball was played to the winger, and with his first touch he flicked it over the head of his opponent, before volleying it over the 'keeper and into the back of the net from over 20 yards out.

There was no further scoring in the second half, though the Spiders did come close after rattling the underside of the crossbar late on.

Clyde: Johnston 32

Celtic produced a superb performance to beat Clyde 4-1 in the City of Glasgow Cup on 21st January. The Hoops went behind in the game but responded impressively to record the win.

Tommy McIntyre’s side started the game on the front foot, and Barry Coffey was the first to test the Clyde goalkeeper with a shot from 25 yards after six minutes, and that was closely followed by chances for Cameron Harper and Kieran McGrath, but Clyde’s goal remained intact.

In the 24th minute, Luca Connell fired a free-kick from the edge of the box that the Clyde keeper did well to save, and three minutes later, Connell came close again with a shot from just outside the area.

Having been on the back foot for most of the game, Clyde took the lead against the run of play just after the half-hour mark when Chris Johnston controlled a cross into the box before firing off a low shot into the bottom corner of the Celtic net.

That goal stung the Hoops into action, however, and two minutes later they were level. Connell delivered a dangerous cross into the Clyde box and McGrath touched the ball home.

Having restored parity, Tommy McIntyre’s side then took a well-deserved lead four minutes before the break and it was McGrath who grabbed his second of the night.

Some slick passing on the edge of the area ended with Coffey floating a cross in. McGrath's header came back off the crossbar but he manage to tuck home the rebound to give the Hoops a 2-1 half-time lead.

Six minutes into the second-half and Karamoko Dembele extended Celtic’s lead with a stunning shot from 20 yards that left the Clyde keeper with no chance. And Luca Connell made it 4-1 just after the hour mark with another stunning strike.

McGrath came close to grabbing a hat-trick in the 70th minute, but the Clyde defence managed to clear the danger. And Adam Brooks, on as a substitute for McGrath was denied by a brave save from the goalkeeper.

SCORERS
Partick Thistle: Mansell (1 min.)
Rangers: McPake (77, 85)

Rangers' Development Squad came from behind to beat Partick Thistle 2-1 on 21st January in the City of Glasgow Cup.

The Gers fought back after losing a goal inside the first 25 seconds to dominate large spells of the game with a Josh McPake double securing all three points.

It was a difficult start to the match for the young Gers as they were early on.

From kick-off the ball was played back to Kyle McClelland who sent the ball to goalkeeper Kieran Wright, but his kick fell into the path of Lewis Mansell who drilled a low effort into the back of the net.

Rangers came close to an equaliser on the 14th minute as Danny Finlayson’s cross from the right evaded Kai Kennedy in the box but met James Maxwell. The left-back took a touch before firing a shot towards goal but it was saved well by Partick goalkeeper Jamie Sneddon.

Kai Kennedy came close with free-kick from 25 yards out as he curled a right-footed effort towards goal but it dipped just over the bar, before Kennedy saw another shot go just wide after good build-up play from James Maxwell.

Josh McPake was next to have a go for the young Gers as they searched for a road back into the game. The forward did well to pick up on a loose ball from Partick Thistle and found himself in space to try a shot from outside the box but it curled just wide of the post.

On the 38th minute Kennedy was again causing problems for the home side as he managed to get a shot away on the edge of the box but it was just inches wide of the target, while Josh McPake saw an effort blocked by the Partick defence just before the break.

The Gers started the second-half the way the ended the first as Graeme Murty’s side pushed for an equaliser. Danny Finlayson glanced a header wide from a Kai Kennedy cross before Josh McPake saw a shot from an angle saved by Jamie Sneddon.

The pressure kept coming from Rangers as a short corner on the 65th minute resulted in Ciaran Dickson cutting the ball back to Josh McPake but he dragged his shot just wide of the goal.

Jamie Sneddon denied the Gers that goal on the 69th minute Ciaran Dickson found Danny Finlayson in the box but his low shot was blocked by the feet of Jamie Sneddon.

Rangers deservedly got the equaliser on the 77th minute as James Maxwell crossed a ball into the feet of Joao Balde. Balde managed to touch the ball on to McPake who fired a powerful shot beyond Jamie Sneddon.

It was McPake again who got the Gers in front with five minutes remaining as Ben Williamson picked him out in the box and the striker drilled an effort beyond Sneddon and secured the three points for Rangers.

SCORERS
Rangers: Mebude (2 min.), Maxwell (19), Balde (67)
Clyde: Smith (33), McStay (83)

Rangers' Development squad picked up another three points in the Glasgow Cup on 28th January with a 3-2 victory over Clyde.

Dapo Mebude and James Maxwell had the Gers two ahead inside the first 20 minutes, before Clyde’s Darren Smith got one back before the break. John Balde restored the Light Blues two-goal lead in the second-half, with Chris McStay getting another back for the visitors.

Rangers were missing Kai Kennedy and Josh McPake after the pair picked up injuries in Saturday’s friendly against Huddersfield, but welcomed back Dapo Mebude who had been out ill since returning from the first-team trip to Dubai.

The Gers were ahead inside the first two minutes as Ciaran Dickson did well on the right to find space and fire a dangerous cross into the box which Dapo Mebude tapped home from close range.

Clyde came close to equalising on the 16th minute as former Rangers winger Gregg Wylde played the ball forward to striker Darren Smith but his first effort was blocked by Ben Williamson before the rebound was fired over the bar.

Rangers were awarded a dangerous free-kick just a few minutes later as Ciaran Dickson was fouled by Ben Duncan on the right-hand side of the box. James Maxwell stepped up to take the set-piece and curled a ball towards goal which evaded everyone in the box and landed in the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

Dickson came close to adding a third shortly after as his long range effort was tipped over the bar by the Clyde goalkeeper.

The visitors had a goal back on the 33rd minute as Darren Smith was through on goal and lifted the ball over Gers keeper Brian Kinnear to get his side back in the game.

The League One side threatened again shortly after as Aaron McNeil was through on goal but his shot was saved well by Brian Kinnear.

Kinnear denied Smith his second of the match early in the second-half as the striker cut inside and got a shot away but the Gers number one reacted quickly to save the effort.

Ben Williamson had a shot for Rangers as James Maxwell’s free-kick fell for the midfielder but his effort was saved by the keeper, before Clyde came close as Chris McStay’s shot went wide of the target.

It was the Gers who got the third on the 68th minute as Ciaran Dickson’s ball was picked up by John Balde who slotted a low effort beyond Michael McGee.

Clyde almost responded instantly with their second of the match as Darren Smith hit the bar with a shot from distance.

The second did come for the visitors with seven minutes of the game remaining as the ball fell for Chris McStay in the box and he fired beyond Brian Kinnear.

Rangers had chances late on to restore their two goal lead as Ben Williamson saw his shot saved before Rhys Breen’s header was cleared off the line.

SCORERS
Rangers: Dickson (86 min.)
Celtic: Connell (34)

Celtic were denied a City of Glasgow Cup win against Rangers when they conceded a late equaliser, which came courtesy of a deflection.

It was a cruel blow for the young Hoops side, who had taken a first-half lead through Luca Connell and then had to play over half-an-hour with 10 men following Ewan Henderson’s dismissal after the midfielder had picked up two yellow cards.

As with every derby fixture, this cup-tie was a fiercely contested affair, and it was Rangers who pushed forward in the early stages of the game, testing Ryan Mullen in the Celtic goal, with the keeper producing a great save on 11 minutes to prevent a goal.

On 18 minutes, Henderson was denied by a save from the Rangers goalkeeper following his effort from a free-kick and then, just a minute later, the woodwork twice came to Rangers’ rescue as first Connell and then Liam Burt saw their efforts hit the post and crossbar respectively.

Having settled into the game, Tommy McIntyre’s side pushed forward in search of the opener and that duly arrived on 34 minutes.

Karamoko Dembele was the provider, surging forward with the ball before slotting it into the path of Connell, who made no mistake with a powerful shot.

Into the second-half and Rangers pushed forward in search of equaliser, but the Celtic defence remained resolute, and Kieran McGrath came close to doubling Celtic’s lead with a shot that was well-saved.

That chance was sandwiched in between two yellow cards for Ewan Henderson, who was sent off on 56 minutes, and it meant the 10 men of Celtic having to dig in to deal with pressure from the home side, with Mullen performing well in goal for the Celts.

However, on the break, the Hoops still looked dangerous and Cameron Harper, on as a replacement for McGrath, was denied on 71 minutes when his effort was saved.

Celtic came close again through Barry Coffey, while Mullen produced two great saves to deny the home side an equaliser.

Unfortunately, there was nothing he could do with four minutes of the match remaining when a speculative shot from Ciaran Dickson ended up in the back of the net via a deflection to make it 1-1.

SCORERS
Queen's Park: Little (68 min.)
Partick Thistle: Barjonas (40)

Thistle’s City of Glasgow Cup campaign continued on 5th February with a closed doors clash with Queen’s Park at Lesser Hampden. The Jags and the Spiders played out a 1-1 draw on a chilly night in the Southside of Glasgow.

Thistle started the brighter side and had the first major action of the game when the returning Shea Gordon picked out a fantastic run from Darian MacKinnon with a floated cross, but Queen’s stopper, Heraghty managed to claw it behind for a corner.

The Jags did end up taking the lead through Jamie Barjonas as half time drew close. The Rangers loanee took a free kick wide of the box which decieved the goalkeeper, sneaking in at the far post to give Thistle the lead.

The second half was a very open affair with the Spiders lucky not to go down to ten men when Creag Little wiped out Mitch Austin as the Australian winger raced down the line. The anger of the Jags team was clear to see as referee, Graham Grainger, flashed a yellow card in the direction of the central defender.

Queen’s had a goal ruled, correctly, out for offside before Foy bundled home the equaliser from close range. Thistle came close through Austin’s volley from the edge of the box before Galasso had a strong shout for a penalty waved away as both sides had to settle for a point.

Thistle Team: Sneddon, Renfrew, Robson, McIntyre, Niang, MacKinnon(Lyon), Gordon(Watson), Barjonas(McDonald), Lyons(Owens), Jones(Galasso), Austin.

The Bully Wee cruised to victory over Partick Thistle in this City of Glasgow Cup tie at Broadwood Stadium.

17-year-old Spanish midfielder Kai McCormack was included in the Clyde squad, after recently signing on amateur terms.

The Bully Wee dominated the game, with Jags 'keeper Jamie Sneddon tipping a bullet header from Chris McStay onto the bar, and getting down to block Ross Cunningham's drive.

Clyde took the lead two minutes before half-time, when Martin McNiff headed home a Chris Johnston corner.

Sneddon made another couple of good saves either side of the interval before Ally Love doubled Clyde's advantage in the 59th minute, after David Goodwillie showed some good footwork and squared the ball to him in the box.

Goodwillie was the provider again six minutes later when his cross into the box was slotted home by Darren Smith.

The Jags netted a consolation in the 83rd minute when substitute Ewan Cameron headed home from close range.

at Lennoxtown Training Centre

SCORERS
Celtic:
 Welsh (3 min.), McGrath (43), Burt (47).

Celtic produced a strong performance to beat Queen’s Park 3-0 at Lennoxtown in a City of Glasgow group-stage game. Captain Stephen Welsh led the way, opening the scoring after just three minutes when he headed home from a superb Kerr McInroy set-piece delivery into the box.

Queen’s Park immediately tried to respond but Kevin Lleshi’s effort from a right angle went over the bar.

The Hoops were controlling possession, and Karamoko tested the visitors’ keeper just moments after Liam Hughes had saved well in the Celtic goal. And Tommy McIntyre’s side came even closer on 23 minutes but Kieran McGrath’s powerful strike came crashing back off the post.

Celtic continued to push forward in search of a second goal, but both Armstrong Oko-Flex and Leo Hjelde were denied by Jacques Heraghty in the Queen’s Park goal.

But with two minutes of the first-half remaining, the Hoops finally doubled their lead when McGrath pounced on a defensive mistake to slot the ball home.

And three minutes after the break, it was 3-0 when Liam Burt latched on to a superb Daniel Church pass to finish coolly. On 51 minutes, Burt was denied his second of the night when Heraghty produced another good save.

With 15 minutes remaining, Hughes was called upon to prevent Queen’s Park pulling a goal back, showing great bravery to make the save. And the visitors’ almost scored Celtic’s fourth of the night with a poor back-pass, but it scraped the post and went wide.

The Hoops remained in control and saw out the game comfortably, thoroughly deserving the 3-0 win.

TEAMS
Celtic: Hughes, Savoury, Church (Paterson 80), Hjelde, Welsh, McInroy (Wylie 50), Dembele, Coffey (McKay 85), McGrath (Murray, 80), Burt (Montgomery 85), Oko-Flex.

Tue. 2nd November 2020
Rangers Training Centre

This was the first competitive game for the young Gers as the 2019/20 City of Glasgow Cup resumed at Rangers Training Centre. It was the youngest Gers side to ever line-up in the competition, with a number of B team players on loan or part of the first-team Covid 'bubble'.

Queen’s Park provided early pressure through Jai Quitongo as he battled down the left wing against Adam Devine to cut into the box and get a shot away but it was into the side netting.

Nicky Hogarth was called into action on the 18th minute as Calum Biggar curled a free kick towards goal but the Rangers goalkeeper got his hand to it to tip it over the bar.

From the resulting corner Queen’s Park thought they had broken the deadlock as the ball fell to Stuart Morrison in the box as he got a touch to divert into the back of the net but the linesman had his flag up for offside.

In another set piece for the visitors Canice Carroll headed over after getting on the end of a free-kick. Dapo Mebude then had a chance for Rangers around the half-hour mark as he found space on the edge of the box but his shot drifted just over the bar.

Early in the second half Ross McCausland drilled a right-footed effort towards goal but it was held comfortably by Queen’s Park goalkeeper Cammy Bell.

Queen’s Park had a dangerous free-kick on the right hand side of the box on the 51st minute which was swung in by Michael McGlinchey. It met the head of Jai Quitongo but his header was just wide.

Ben Williamson picked out Kyle McClelland at the far post with a free-kick for Rangers shortly after but the centre-half couldn’t keep his effort down as it drifted over the bar.

Queen’s Park were continuing to pressure the young Rangers side as Ross MacLean’s shot was headed off the line by Adam Devine, before Canice Carroll had a shot just over the bar from a corner.

Kevin Thomson and Brian Gilmour made two changes on the hour mark as Cole McKinnon and Zac Butterworth were replaced by Robbie Fraser and Alex Lowry.

A great double save from Cammy Bell and the woodwork denied Rangers an opener on the 66th minute as Ross McCausland controlled the ball well from a Nicky Hogarth kick to race towards goal.

McCausland’s effort was blocked by Bell before the rebound fell to Nathan Young-Coombes which the former Rangers stopper also somehow got his body in front of. Chris McKee was quick to react to the rebound and sent a curling effort towards goal which bounced off the post.

With 10 minutes of the game remaining Queen’s Park came close as Quitongo drove to the byline before cutting the ball back to the trialist but it was blocked well by Nicky Hogarth.

Cammy Bell was called into action again as Rangers searched for a winner. Ben Williamson played the ball through to Dapo Mebude who turned well to fire a shot at goal but Bell got his fingers to it to touch it over the bar.

Rangers:
